Crisler's design for the Princeton helmet graced the cover ofSpalding's Official Football Guide for 1938. Michigan wanted to add a little element against the Fighting Irish during the second game of the season in 2013. The Wolverines added some blue flakes on the blue part of the helmet. Back in 2012, Michigan had another alternative jersey made to compete in the Outback Bowl against South Carolina. It’s a symbol of the Wolverines’ long-standing excellence in the sport. The most significant change occurred in 1969 with the arrival of former head coach Bo Schembechler. The man who would become the most revered head coach in Michigan Football history was ultimately responsible for the maize, football-shaped award decals that still appear on the helmets today. Any opposing player can tell you that is one of the scariest sights in college football—so much so some visiting coaches won't even let their players watch. Several Michigan opponents, including Notre Dame and Indiana, have taken to taping the design over their helmets during practice to lessen the shock of seeing the maize and blue helmets come flying out of the tunnel and set up across the line. Fritz Crisler won a national championship in 1947, he changed the game forever with the platoon system in the late 1940s, and he shaped college football by serving on the NCAA rules committee for over two decades before he retired in 1968.

Coach Harry Kipke left a core of veterans and some very promising sophomores, but one of Crisler's first tasks was to instill a new attitude in the team. Known as a wily tactician and motivator, Crisler introduced the new helmet and changes in the Wolverine's uniform to mark the beginning of a new era. History proves that no coach or team invented the design of the winged helmet, it was simply a Spalding stock item that several colleges used starting in 1930. With one of the most iconic helmet designs in college football history, the University of Michigan's recognizable maize winged look on navy shells has been around since 1938 when Herbert “Fritz” Crisler left Princeton University for Ann Arbor. Crisler brought his preferred design to the Wolverines and the rest was history. A design originally based on functional and structural parts of the helmet is now purely decorative. Or maybe it has taken on a new function as symbol of and link to Michigan's great athletic tradition.
It’s a dark blue helmet with a maize-colored, distinctive winged pattern on each side. This design has remained unchanged for decades, and there’s a good reason for that. The Wolverines were one of the first teams to debut Jordan Brand's signature Jordan I Retro cleat last season, an instant home run among players and staff. This particular Jordan model -- outfitted for the first time ever in Michigan's familiar navy blue and maize colors -- originally released in 1985 and was later retroed in 1994. Now, the Air Jordan 1 Retro is one of the best-selling models on the market.
Crisler figured the helmet would help his quarterbacks find receivers downfield. "There was a tendency to use different colored helmets just for receivers in those days, but I always thought that would be as helpful for the defense as for the offense," Crisler recalled. The Michigan Football helmet is arguably the most iconic and recognizable piece of equipment not just in college football, but in all of sports. The communications would turn off with 15 seconds on the play clock or when the ball is snapped, whichever happens first.
The one addition we'd include is a navy bumper with a gold 'Block M' instead of the current white bumper and maize letter on this concept. In addition to this National Championship ring, players and staff members received the Official College Football Playoff Championship Ring, the Big Ten Championship Ring and the Rose Bowl Championship Ring. All of these intricate designs were created and crafted by Jostens. A familiar school motto — “THOSE WHO STAY WILL BE CHAMPIONS” — is imprinted on the inside of the ring, along with the team’s season record (“15-0”) and the official CFP logo. This incredible ring is finished with the word “BET” on the outside of the band, which was a rally cry throughout the season. The Mid-American Conference’s football media day provide a peek at the new uniforms, but the helmet that made the trip – one that featured black numbers against a white background – seemed like more of a placeholder than a permanent option.
